Sotheby’s London, 13 June - Sotheby’s first sale dedicated exclusively to the classical world totalled £3,400,750 in London today, with an array of ancient marble sculpture and works of art from the Greek, Roman and Etruscan periods meeting enthusiasm from bidders. The auction was led by a Roman Marble Figure of Aphrodite, circa 2nd-century AD, bringing £341,000 (est. £120,000-180,000). Further highlights included a Roman Marble Relief of Mithras Slaying the Bull, 2nd/early 3rd Century A.D. from the innermost shrine of a mithraeum, a temple for this mysterious religion centred around the god Mithras, which sold for £293,000, and a Cycladic Marble Figure of a Goddess, Early Bronze Age II, circa 2700-2600 B.C. that soared over six times its pre-sale estimate to £100,000.
