Art14 London Announces Educational Programme of Talks

Art14 London, sponsored by Citi Private Bank, is pleased to announce an educational talks programme that will be staged during the Fair offering visitors the opportunity to learn about contemporary art from different and emerging parts of the world. The programme will bring together participants from the Global Private Museum Summit, Art & the City, members of the International Advisory Board as well as independent art world experts. Speakers will include Kate Rothko, daughter of the late American painter, Mark Rothko, the Indonesian collector Dr Oei Hong Djien and Ramin Salsali who owns the Salsali Private Museum in Dubai. In a series titled ’10 Things You Didn’t Know About…’ renowned art world figures will offer an opportunity to discover new artists and artistic trends from across the globe. The talks will reflect Art14 London’s global reach with 180 galleries from 40 countries presenting modern and contemporary art from regions such as Asia, the Middle East and Africa, next to galleries from Europe and the US. Artists will participate from cities including Lagos, Berlin, Beijing, Dubai, Buenos Aires, Osaka, Mumbai and São Paulo and will examine issues such as the impact that art has on the urban landscape and the increasing significance of private museums and art production in global countries.

10 Things You Didn’t Know About… This series of informal talks will explore contemporary art across the globe focusing on art from specific countries and mediums. Each talk will last for 20 minutes and highlight the 10 points pertinent to the subject. Eight talks form this programme, which aims to encourage visitors to explore the many aspects of global contemporary art and offers a rare opportunity to hear international collectors, museum directors and private museum owners discuss insights into collecting. The series includes the following topics, which form part of the programme running on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12.30pm:

Indonesian Art – Dr Oei Hong Djien, Owner of OHD Museum Collecting Photography – Brett Rogers, Director, Photographer’s Gallery, London Chinese Art – Philip Dodd, Chairman of Made in China UK and Chairman of Art14 London International Advisory Board Collecting Middle-Eastern Art – Ramin Salsali, Owner of Salsali Private Museum Collecting Editions – Iwona Blazwick, Director, Whitechapel Gallery, London

‘Museum Era: The Rise of Asia’, Friday 28 February 2014, 4pm Across the world, privately owned museums are changing the way the art world works. At the Fair private museum owners from China to Germany and from the US to Indonesia will come together for the Global Private Museum Summit, a forum to help develop a sustainable future for the art world. Alongside the summit, a public talk will examine the impact that private and public museums have on contemporary life in Asia. Speakers will include key figures from across the Asian continent:

Dr Oei Hong Djien (Indonesia), Owner of OHD Museum, a private museum that specialises in modern and contemporary Indonesian art Wang Wei (China), Established the Long Museum in Shanghai in 2012, showcasing classical, modern and contemporary Chinese art. She is opening a second museum in March 2014 Budi Tek (China/Indonesia), The Yuz Museum in Shanghai has just opened showcasing art from around the world. Sunhee Kim (Korea), Director of the Daegu Art Museum and former senior curator of Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum

Art & the City, Saturday 1 March 2014, 2.30pm The talk will examine the importance of place-making internationally and look at cities from Washington to Shanghai, from Rome to Daugavpils in Latvia where the Mark Rothko Art Center has recently opened. The talk will discuss how art is driving urban regeneration. Each of the speakers has in their own way pioneered developments in cities through the promotion of art and culture and will highlight how art is a motor of change, not just culturally but socially and economically as well. Participants will include:

Kate Rothko (USA), Daughter of the late painter Mark Rothko, has been a key figure in the founding of the Mark Rothko Center in Daugavpils, Latvia, where Mark Rothko was born. Dai Zhikang (China), Founder and Chairman of the Zendai Group which has major commercial/cultural developments across China and has now acquired a property development project in South Africa. Dai Zhikang is also the owner of the Himalayas Art Museum in Shanghai. Giovanna Melandri (Italy), President of MAXXI, National Museum of the 21st Century Arts of Rome, former Minister of Culture, Italy. Don and Mera Rubell (USA), They are the owners of Rubell Family Collection in Miami and are working on a new cultural development in Washington, including a museum, which will help regenerate that part of the city.
