ART FAIR TOKYO celebrates its tenth anniversary in March 2015. Masayoshi Kodaira has handled the graphic design for the fair ever since it was first held in 2005. For this milestone fair Kodaira has created a “window” through which we will look at future Tokyo. With just five years to go until the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, the design invites us to re-‐examine “Tokyo” as we look ahead to the major sporting and cultural event. The design also features gold and silver, bringing a celebratory flourish to this anniversary fair. Social media, newsletters and other publicity have also made use of a special tenth-‐anniversary logo.
Following the style of previous fairs, the venue is divided into two sections: North Wing and South Wing. The fair will feature a total of around 140 exhibitors, including galleries from 30 cities worldwide, as well as corporate sponsors and other partners. This year also sees 26 galleries participating in the fair for the very first time, the largest number ever, demonstrating how far ART FAIR TOKYO has come during the ten years it has existed.
The North Wing features around 90 booths, including some of the leading galleries in Japan as well as overseas galleries. Exhibited artworks will include antiques and some of the best m odern artworks from around the world. The entrance to the fair will this year showcase galleries exhibiting applied art, making the fair a rare chance for visitors to encounter the unique and rich expression techniques in Japan crafts in the context of an art fair.
The South Wing will feature around 40 galleries dealing in contemporary art. The displays in each booth are curated with visitor experience in mind. This year the Artistic Practices section (see next page) has been expanded to mark the tenth anniversary, and will take an overview of Japanese contemporary art from the twin perspectives of the Rimpa school of painting and the Venice Biennale. The South Wing will also feature popular examples of jewelry.
