The British artist Antony Gormley (1950) gained worldwide renown for his sculptures and installations which explore the relationship between the human body and the space that surrounds us. Antony approaches the perennial subject of the human body in art in an entirely unique and philosophical way. The artist deploys his own body to ask fundamental questions about the relationships between man, nature and the cosmos.
This will be the largest solo show held at Voorlinden since its opening. Antony's work – from early pieces made in the 1980s to his most recent sculptures – will be displayed outdoors on the estate and in a large portion of the museum. Voorlinden has enjoyed close ties with Antony Gormley for years; six of his works from our collection will be exhibited. The twelve-meter-long steel sculpture Passage (2016) – a tunnel that takes the viewer through the dark unknown – will be shown in the Netherlands for the first time. Another room-filling work from the collection, the three-dimensional spatial drawing Breathing Room (2010), has likewise never before been displayed in this country.
