Ausstellung19.09.2019 - 22.09.2019
Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac is pleased to announce its inaugural participation in EXPO Chicago 2019, where highlights will include a selection of new and historical works by Georg Baselitz, Oliver Beer, Joseph Beuys, Tony Cragg, Donald Judd, Ilya Kabakov, Alex Katz, Anselm Kiefer, Robert Longo, Liza Lou, Sigmar Polke, Robert Rauschenberg, Gerhard Richter, Tom Sachs, Emilio Vedova and Yan Pei-Ming.
Robert Rauschenberg’s metal painting Washed Ghost (Borealis) (1989) was created from ‘corrosions’ on a brass sheet, producing subtle colour and tonal shifts between the acid washes and the untarnished metal. The titular ‘washed ghost’ is suggested by a spectral white cloth on a washing line that Rauschenberg silkscreened onto the metal.
Herdoktorfreud Grüßgott Herbootsmann (2011) by Georg Baselitz is based on the Austrian psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) whose theories on dreams and the subconscious were supremely influential. In this series, Baselitz posits encounters between the figure of the Herrdoktor (doctor) and different forms of the ‘everyman’, here as Herbootsmann (boatman). Baselitz’s new works are on view in the exhibition Time at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac Paris Pantin until 25 January 2020.
Imi Knoebel's Bild 06.07.2018 (2018) is resolutely abstract, continuing Malevich's notion of ‘pure perception’ and relying on a pared down vocabulary of forms combined with a subtle use of colour. The three pale ovoid forms are cut from aluminium, a material the artist has used as a painting ground since the 1990s.
