Masterpieces by Picasso, Modigliani, Rodin and Warhol Unveiled in London

London

The finest Modigliani portrait to come to the market in a decade (est. in excess of £30m) A loving tribute to the artist’s eternal muse, Jeanne Hébuterne (au foulard), the painting embodies one of the most tragic love stories in art history. Jeanne met Modigliani in 1917, when she was a young art student, and for the next three years she was his constant companion and source of inspiration. Shortly after Modigliani died of tubercular meningitis Jeanne Hébuterne, inconsolable and reputedly heavily pregnant with the artist’s child, committed suicide by leaping from an upstairs window.

Pablo Picasso’s ‘defining moment in Modern Art’ (est. in excess of £28m) Cubism is considered to be Pablo Picasso’s most important contribution to Modern art, and Femme assise of 1909 is one of the artist’s greatest Cubist portraits. Femme assise was painted in the summer of 1909 when Picasso travelled to his native Spain to the remote village of Horta de Ebro which could only be accessed by mule. Here Picasso created a series of canvases based on the features of his lover Fernande Olivier, over a period described as ‘the most crucial and productive’ in the artist’s career.

Rodin’s ‘Eve’ (est. £8-12m) One of the most significant works in the artist’s œuvre, this sculpture was formerly in the collection of actor Sylvester Stallone, who owned a number of works by Rodin including the daring sculpture of’ Iris’ which sold for £11.6m in Sotheby’s February 2016 Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale, a record price for the artist.

Jenny Saville’s monumental ‘Shift’, exhibited as part of infamous ‘Sensation’ exhibition (est. £1.5-2m) Unseen since it was first exhibited in Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection, Jenny Saville’s monumental painting (330.2 by 330.2cm) merits its revered place in art history as the standout work of her prodigious career. It stands as a definitive work of the YBA era, alongside Damien Hirst’s infamous pickled shark and Tracey Emin’s tent.

Andy Warhol’s Iconic Portrait of Marilyn Monroe (est. £1.8-2.5m) Four Marilyns (Reversal Series), 1976-86 is a haunting memorial to one of the most famous and adorned movie stars of the Twentieth Century and Warhol’s most iconic subject.

A Momentous Graphic Work by Edvard Munch (est. £800,000-1.2m) The Scream, a lithograph of 1895, acquired directly from the artist by the Norwegian industrialist and art patron Olaf Schou. Appearing on the market for the first time.
