An exceptionally rare and highly collectible piece of British barware, the Binocular Double Spirit Flask was made by the prominent large-scale silversmiths James Dixon & Sons (estimate $800/1,200). Disguised as a real pair of aluminum binoculars with a leather covering, the caps of the ‘ocular lenses’ can be twisted off and filled with a spirit and/or mixer while the ‘objective lenses’ on the opposite side contain two removable cups. The 1930s era flask illustrates one of the many ingenious designs for items that could be used to conceal alcohol.
Alan Bedwell commented: “Of all the pieces on offer in the sale, this is one that I personally love. To take a common object and completely change its purpose for something else, while retaining the design integrity is fascinating and I particularly love how the built-in cups highlight a wonderful and civil world it used to be. I could see myself sneaking these into a football game and not getting caught! “
A set of Six Sterling Silver Heart Shaped Cocktail Spoons from the 1940s are a sophisticated yet useful essential item for the home bar (estimate $600/800). Long enough to fit in a high ball style glass, these spoons are also environmentally friendly as the handles double as a re-usable straw.
Alan Bedwell commented: “These fun spoons are the perfect tool to muddle and then sip your mojito with, while not polluting the environment and adhering to the re-usable conscious world we live in today.
