AUCTIONS 11 & 12 DECEMBER IN NEW YORK
NEW YORK, 8 December 2018 – Sotheby’s is pleased to present highlights from our December auctions of 20th Century Design in New York. The trio of auctions include two dedicated offerings of important masterworks by Tiffany Studios and John La Farge – two of the most celebrated American glass masters of the 20th Century. The Geyer Collection: Masterworks of Tiffany and Prewar Design (11 December) and Dreaming in Glass: Masterworks by Tiffany and La Farge (12 December) together offer more than 130 rare and diverse examples of the iconic artists’ most covetable pieces.
Our December offering of Important Design features a highly curated selection of superb Pre- and Postwar European and American design from the last century, featuring outstanding works from several important private collections, led by a pair of unique “Végétale” mirrors by Claude Lalanne.
Additional highlights include: a large ensemble of works by François-Xavier Lalanne and Harry Bertoia from the collection of Dick and Jane Stoker; an important and encyclopedic collection of silver and pewter clocks by Archibald Knox from the Talmor Collection; and important Prewar American and European design from the collection of Daniel Wolf. The Prewar chapter features American design by Charles Rohlfs, Gustav Stickley, Greene & Greene and Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as important European design, including Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann’s iconic “Lit Soleil” and a group of stunning French Art Deco vases by Jean Dunand. Exemplary works from the American Studio movement by Wendell Castle, Peter Voulkos and George Nakashima round out the Postwar highlights, while Ron Arad’s “Loop Loop” chair is among the striking Contemporary designs on offer.
Sotheby’s exhibitions of 20th Century Design open today, 8 December at our York Avenue headquarters, with the auctions on 11 and 12 December.
