THE AUCKLAND PROJECT AT SOTHEBY’S: AN EXHIBITION OF WORKS FROM THE SPANISH GALLERY On View 26 January – 11 February
Sotheby’s is thrilled to present an exhibition of outstanding Spanish Old Master paintings acquired by The Auckland Project, which seeks to create social and economic regeneration to the former industrial town of Bishop Auckland and its surrounding area, through the creation of a world-class cultural and heritage destination. The paintings in this exhibition are part of the permanent collection of the new Spanish Gallery, the first purpose-built museum in the UK dedicated to exploring the arts and cultures of the Spanish world, particularly the Golden Age. Opening in 2019, the Gallery aims to put into context the fine set of Zurbarán paintings of Jacob and His Twelve Sons, which have been in Auckland Castle since 1756, and are now the subject of a new exhibition at the Frick Collection. This is the first time they have been in America, although they were probably painted for the South American market more than three centuries ago, we invite you to be among the first to see these paintings from the Spanish Gallery in this unique preview of The Auckland Project at Sotheby’s.
