Sotheby’s Contemporary Curated Sale Totals $31 Million in New York

An arresting example of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s inimitable corpus of works on paper, Untitled (Head) achieved $1.4 million. An exceptionally intricate illustration of Basquiat’s skill as a draftsman, Untitled (Head) demonstrates a decisively resolved composition, revealing the gravity and intent with which the artist approached his works on paper, juxtaposing feverish intensity with a remarkable technical finesse. Also leading the afternoon session, Damien Hirst’s Happy [Dappy] soared past its $350,000 high estimate to fetch $1.3 million.

In addition to Project Geländewagen, the October sale included a number of charitable sequences: Works Sold to Benefit the High Line were led by Simone Leigh’s No Face (House), which was executed earlier this year, established a new auction record for the artist when it achieved $403,200, more than doubling its $150,000 high estimate. On offer to benefit Planned Parenthood of Greater New York, Cecily Brown’s Immigrant Song from 2019 achieved $441,000. Also from the Choice Works ensemble, Dana Schutz’s Boat Group 1 sold for multiples of its high estimate, achieving $214,200.
