Sotheby’s NY Important Watches Auction to be Led by Rare Pair of Singing Bird Boxes

MODERN MARVELS BY INDEPENDENT MAKERS
In addition to offerings by historical brands, the May auction highlights wristwatches by modern companies including Richard Mille and Greubel Forsey. The former is highlighted by a RM008 Platinum Split Seconds Chronograph Tourbillon Wristwatch, the magnum opus of Richard Mille’s collection and one of the most complicated objects ever made. Comprised of over 500 parts, this Formula 1 inspired watch enables the wearer to time two distinct events. One of only 30 VRM008 V1 models that exist, the present lot carries an estimate of $250/500,000. Emerging from the Collection of Modern Complicated Wristwatches from an American Collector is a Greubel Forsey Limited Edition Pink Gold Quadruple Tourbillon Wristwatch with Power Reserve Indication. No 15, also known as the Quadruple Tourbillon, employs four different tourbillons at two angles in order to eliminate variations in rate, and to keep time. This hypnotizing wristwatch will be offered with an estimate of $200/400,000.

FANCIFUL TIMEPIECES BY CARTIER AND VAN CLEEF & ARPELS
The sale is completed by a number of wonderfully decorated watches and clocks. A Unique and Important Rock Crystal, Coral, Onyx, Mother of Pearl, Yellow Gold and Silver Gilt, Diamond and Gem-Set Desk Timepiece by Cartier takes center stage amongst the offerings (estimate $200/300,000). Its distinct micro-mosaic dial and Art-Deco elements beautifully harkens back to the early 20th Century design that inspired this series made in 1982, the details of which are laid out in Le Temps de Cartier. Also up for auction is a group of beautiful artistic timepieces from a California Collection, led by Van Cleef & Arpel’s Rare Limited Edition White Gold Diamond and Sapphire Set Wristwatch with Enamel Dial, referred to as Poetry in Time. Enameled by the talented and highly-reputable Dominique Baron, the present watch, with its unique gem setting, embodies her artistic touch and skill. Estimated at $40/60,000, this beautiful work is accompanied by a personalized rendering as well as the complete set of papers.
